Our Hearts Are the Key…
We’re living in a world that moves fast, often too fast for our hearts to keep up, but it’s through our hearts that we can begin to live a life of more fulfillment, joy, empathy, and creativity.
When life starts to pull us out of alignment, when we are overstimulated, consuming too much (whether news, chaotic tiktok vidoes, online shopping etc) we tend to feel it in our bodies first:
- Tight chest
- Racing thoughts
- Shallow breath
- Disconnection from joy
- A quiet ache to feel… something… anything
So what’s the remedy?
Your heart knows, and it holds the key. Not just about emotions, it’s a powerful source of wisdom and inner guidance.
When you tune into your heart, whether through meditation, breathwork, yoga, or through creativity, connection with nature and animals, we begin to return to ourselves.
💓 What Is Heart Coherence?
Heart coherence is a physiological state where your heart, brain, and nervous system are in harmonious rhythm. It’s been widely studied by the HeartMath Institute, who define it as:
“The science-based practice of synchronizing your heart and brain
This alignment balances your nervous system and creates coherence between your heart, mind, and emotions — which is key to clearing stress and unlocking your higher capacities.…It’s an empowering state physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually, allowing us to become our best selves.“
When You’re in a Coherent State:
- Your heart rate becomes more rhythmic and smooth
- Stress hormones decrease
- You experience greater access to compassion, clarity, and creativity
Heart Coherence is practiced through meditation, breathwork, and gratitude, but there are two powerful ways to enter and enhance this state…
✨ Being with (regulated/healthy) horses
🎨 Creating art (stepping into the flow state)
How Horses Guide Us Into Coherence
Horses are energetic masters.
If our heart is the size of our fist, theirs is the size of a bowling ball, and while our electromagnetic field (explained here) extends several feet around us, a horse’s is five times that. Meaning, they can energetically feel and sense not only physical presence but energy and emotions from across the pasture, dozens of feet away.
Research by the HeartMath Institute has shown that horses emit a powerful coherent electromagnetic field, which can actually entrain and regulate the human heart rhythm.
Simply put, that means just being near a horse can help your body shift from stress to calm (as long as the horse has its needs met–friends, forage, freedom, function– and is regulated themselves).
They also are great teachers of nervous system regulation – that we aren’t meant to always be “perfectly regulated” but moreso, how to become more resilient. When a horse experiences a perceived threat, they will go into a fight, flight or freeze state, however, when that threat has passed, they can drop back into their bodies and “go back to grazing.”
How Horses Bring Us into Our Hearts:
- Horses are always in the present moment (they don’t multitask, overthink, live in the past or future)
- They mirror your emotional state, offering immediate feedback without judgment (this can be things like tensing, scattered energy, frustration, fear, if that’s what you are presenting internally)
- They help bring your attention into your body and out of your mental loops
- They naturally invite coherence, safety, and grounded awareness
Horses don’t ask you to “do” they invite you to simply be. They respond to authenticity, live from the heart, and they can teach us to do the same, if we are willing.
Creativity & Flow State
Now, let’s bring creativity into the picture.
Much like being around horses, creativity is a powerful way to connect our mind, heart, and bodies, to be in the present moment, and to experience flow state.
What happens in the Flow State?
- Action and awareness merge – everything else around us fades away
- Sense of self disappears and we are fully immersed in what we are doing (allowing us to feel connected to something greater outside of ourselves, our ego)
- Time dilates (slows down or speeds up)
In studies, creative flow states show brain-heart synchronization, reduced cortisol levels, and enhanced mood, all key indicators of coherence.
All of this to say that whether you’re coloring, doodling, journaling, singing or dancing…
Creativity connects you to your heart.
The Triangle of Presence: Horses, Heart, and Creative Practice
When we bring horses + creativity together through the lens of heart coherence, something beautiful begins to unfold.
You begin to:
- Listen deeper (to yourself, and to the horse)
- Communicate from the heart
- See emotions as energy in motion – not labelling emotions as “good or bad”
- Express emotion instead of suppressing it
- Learn how you regulate your nervous system when things feel out of your control
- Remember who you are and feel connected to something greater than just ‘you’
This is the energy behind the offerings I’ve created — for equestrians, creatives, and anyone who is ready to reconnect to themselves, nature, and horses.

Simple Heart Coherence Practice
Whether you’re near a horse, at your kitchen table, or somewhere in between — you can access coherence through this simple practice:
- Pause & Breathe:
Bring your attention to your heart area. Begin breathing in and out slowly, about 5–6 seconds each - Activate a Positive Emotion
Recall a moment of gratitude, love, or appreciation. Let it fill your body. Relax. Smile. - Create or Connect
- Pick up a pen and color
- Free write– gratitude, love letter, a reminder to self
- Sit with a horse and match your breath to theirs
Final Thoughts: Come Back to the Heart
When the world feels overwhelming, uncertain, too loud to hear your own truth, remember to return to what’s real. Get your feet in the dirt, hands in clay, touch moss, share breath with an animal, sit with a tree. Be in your body and it will open your heart.
💬 FAQs
Q: What if I’m not artistic or don’t own a horse?
No problem. This is about energy, not expertise. Coloring, writing, imagining, it all counts. And you don’t need to ride or own a horse to feel their medicine, that’s why the free horse coloring pages are a great place to start. They will bring you into the energy and frequency of horse wisdom without even being in their physical presence.
Q: Can I do this even if I’m new to creative practice?
Absolutely! The key is presence, not perfection. Start where you are and let your heart lead.
Q: How often should I practice coherence or creativity?
Even a few minutes a day can shift your nervous system and open your heart. Think of this as ritual, not routine.
